What are the common ways that truck drivers cause accidents?

Many Connecticut residents may get nervous when they are driving their vehicles on our state’s highways next to a large truck, such as a semi-truck. There is good reason to be nervous in these types of situations: These large trucks weigh significantly more than regular passenger vehicles, and any resulting accident between these types of vehicles of such disparate size can be devastating. So, what are the most common ways that truck drivers cause accidents?

Typically, there are three different types of scenarios that can lead to a truck driver causing a truck accident. First, truck drivers may be unqualified to operate their vehicles. While it is true that most truck drivers are skilled and adequately trained, there are some who do not understand the safest driving techniques for any given situation, and others who may not practice defensive driving despite the best training.

Next, truck drivers can be pressured by their employers to drive long hours on the roads – sometimes longer than they are allowed to do based on federal regulations. When truck drivers operate their vehicles for extended periods of time, they can become drowsy, leading to a lessened level of awareness while driving.

Lastly, another area of pressure that truck drivers can experience from their employers is speed: getting the delivery to where it needs to go, quickly. That can cause some truck drivers to operate their vehicles at faster speeds than is acceptable. The result can be devastating truck accidents that can leave victims facing serious injuries, or even result in death.
