How deadly are motorcycle accidents in America?

| Oct 12, 2017 | Motorcycle Accidents |

Motorcyclists in Connecticut are going to be out on the roads for a few more weeks at least, while the nice autumn weather holds. Then, to their dismay, most will store their motorcycles for the winter, waiting for the first break of spring weather. Millions of Americans enjoy riding motorcycles for recreation, and many also as their main mode of transportation. Unfortunately, that means that millions of people each year are at risk of being involved in a motorcycle accident.

The results of a motorcycle accident can be deadly. Just how deadly? Well, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2015 – the last year for which statistics are available – nearly 5,000 people died in motorcycle accidents in America. That may not sound like a lot when compared to the number of people who are killed in car accidents, but consider this: In that year, the NHTSA found that motorcyclists were 29 times more likely to die in a crash than people in passenger vehicles.

And, when the 2015 statistics are compared to 2014, the number of fatalities in motorcycle accidents saw a whopping 8.3 percent increase. We can only hope that when the data from 2016 and 2017 comes in that it shows that increase was an aberration. Unfortunately, with the increasing number of distracted drivers on our roadways, that may be a fool’s hope.

There is no denying how much of a danger any type of collision can be for motorcyclists in Connecticut. It seems that the best that motorcyclists can do is maintain constant awareness of their surroundings, especially at intersections or when passing other vehicles on the roadways. Distracted drivers are everywhere these days, and it doesn’t take much to draw their attention away from the road for just one second – enough to cause a deadly motorcycle accident.
