Distracted or negligent drivers can cause motorcycle accidents

| Jul 21, 2017 | Motorcycle Accidents |

Motorcyclists in Connecticut wait through the long winter months for a chance to get on the roads when the weather improves. The summer months are motorcycle months, and our readers have probably noticed an increase in the number of motorcycles on the roads in Connecticut over the last several weeks. However, there are dangers that motorcyclists need to be aware of when they hit the road, foremost of which is the danger presented by other vehicles.

When motorcyclists are involved in accidents, many of these incidents involve other vehicles. And, when another vehicle is involved, the risk of serious injury — or even death — for the motorcyclist increases significantly. Also, the unfortunate reality is that many of these types of accidents occur because the other driver made a mistake. In fact, statistics show that in motorcycle and car collisions about 66 percent of these collisions occur because the driver of the other vehicle violated the motorcyclist’s right-of-way. In essence, the other driver was responsible for the motorcycle accident.

Why is it so common for the drivers of other vehicles to cause motorcycle accidents? Well, the most likely explanation is that the other driver simply was not doing a good job of staying aware of his surroundings. It is obvious that motorcycles have a lower profile than passenger vehicles and trucks, making them harder to see. But, the burden is on all drivers on the road to be aware of other vehicles.

Most motorcyclists are seasoned riders who know how to handle their motorcycle. And, they are far less likely to be distracted by their cell phones, since riding a motorcycle involves complete body control. Nonetheless, the danger presented by other drivers on the road cannot be underestimated.
