National Brain Injury Awareness Month begins this March

Brain injuries have many sources. For example, many people in Hartford might suffer a traumatic brain injury in a car accident. A brain injury could also result from a sporting accident, such as a football or diving injury, or one could hit his or her head on the ground in a slip-and-fall accident. In the end, it is important to have an understanding about such injuries. To that end, March has been designated as National Brain Injury Awareness Month.

Over 5 million people in the United States have a disability related to a brain injury. As many as 2.5 million people in the U.S. will suffer a traumatic brain injury annually. 2.2 million people will seek treatment in the emergency room for a traumatic brain injury, and of those, approximately 280,000 people will need to be hospitalized. In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that traumatic brain injuries lead to approximately 30 percent of all injury-related fatalities annually in the nation.

Traumatic brain injuries can be caused when a person suffers a hit or jolt to the head. Some brain injuries are closed, while others penetrate the skull. A brain injury can cause a disruption in the victim’s normal brain function. Some traumatic brain injuries are mild, causing only a brief alteration in a victim’s consciousness or mental status. Other traumatic brain injuries are severe, causing amnesia or long-term unconsciousness.

If a person suffers a brain injury, the results can be significant. They may require hospitalization and follow-up care and rehabilitation, all of which can be extremely costly. The situation is even more upsetting when the injury is caused by someone else’s negligence, for example, in a car accident caused by a reckless driver. When that happens, brain injury victims may want to explore their legal options.
