Dog bite victim receives $1.4 million for devastating injuries

| Aug 26, 2016 | Uncategorized |

In a nearby Connecticut community southeast of Hartford a judge recently awarded a victim injured by a friend’s dog at the friend’s house $1.4 million. The victim, who is 16 now, suffered dog bite injuries while visiting a friend’s house when he was 13. The injuries the victim suffered as a result of the dog attack required numerous surgeries to treat. The victim has endured 10 surgeries already and is likely to need 2 more. He has also suffered permanent scarring. As a result of the dog attack, the victim suffered serious injuries to his face, chin, lip, left eye, neck, shoulder and chest.

The mother of the victim reports that he is anxious before the surgeries and suffers significant pain following them. The owners of the dog claimed that he had not done anything like the attack the victim suffered before. Of the damages awarded to the victim, $1.2 million was for noneconomic damages such as pain and suffering damages. Connecticut law provides for strict liability for owners when their animals have caused injury or damages. In other words, regardless of the dog’s history or precautions that may be taken, for the protection of the public, if a dog causes injury, the dog’s owner will be liable to compensate the victim for the damages.

Because dog bite injuries can be catastrophic, victims can suffer a variety of damages including physical, financial and emotional damages. The physical and emotional trauma may continue with victims for the rest of their lives. As a result, a the legal process provides protections such as a personal injury claim for damages that can allow victims to recover compensation for medical expenses, future medical care, lost wages, lost-earning capacity and pain and suffering damages.

Dog bite injuries can leave victims scarred for life emotionally and physically. It is helpful for victims that have suffered harm in a dog attack to be aware of the legal options available to assist them.
