Is there more than one kind of diffuse brain injury?

Traumatic brain injuries are extremely dangerous and can be very debilitating. That’s because a TBI can have an effect on every aspect of a person’s health. Any TBI that involves very specific areas of the brain is known as a focal brain injury, while a TBI that involves the entire brain is known as a diffuse brain injury. Just like focal brain injuries, diffuse brain injuries can fall into different types. But, how many kinds of diffuse brain injury are there?

There are three main kinds of diffuse brain injury. The first is the type that is most familiar to everyone: a concussion. A concussion is the mildest form of a diffuse brain injury, and it can be categorized into either grades one, two or three, with three being the most severe. A person who receives a concussion may or may not lose consciousness.

Another type of diffuse brain injury is a diffuse axonal injury. A DAI occurs when the brain rapidly moves back and forth inside the skull due to an impact. The quick movement of the brain shears, stretches and damages the nerve axons. Since axons are very much like telephone wires, and the damage they receive from the injury prevents them from conducting normal nerve signals throughout the brain. A DAI can be recognized by unusual behavior, including changes in a person’s wakefulness.

The third type of diffuse brain injury is known as a Traumatic Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, which occurs when an injury to the brain causes bleeding into the space that surrounds the brain. Any Connecticut resident who may have suffered a TBI due to the negligence of someone else may want to get more information in order to discover if there are legal avenues that are available to them.
