Bicycle helmets can help prevent traumatic brain injury

The return of spring weather means that many more Connecticut residents will be riding their bicycles. However, this increase in bicycle riders means that there is also an increased risk for bicycle accidents. A bicycle accident can result in serious injuries including traumatic brain injuries. One step that bicyclists can take to help minimize brain injuries is to always wear a helmet while riding.

Recent studies have confirmed that cyclists who wear a helmet suffer less serious injuries. One recent study using data from the American College of Surgeons found that bicyclists who wear helmets had a 58 percent less chance of receiving a traumatic brain injury. The researchers examined data from more than 6,000 bicycle accidents where the bicycle riders suffered a TBI as a result of that accident. They found that only 25 percent of them were wearing helmets. The researchers also found that the use of a helmet also reduced the number of deaths in an accident.

A curious result of the research was that there was a distinct relationship found between a cyclist’s age and gender and helmet use. The researchers found that the group of cyclists who used helmets the least were those who were between the ages of 10 and 20. But for every increase of 10 years in age, the percentage of helmet use went up. The study also found that a higher percentage of women wore helmets when compared to men.

There is no doubt that the use of bicycle helmets has helped reduce the number cyclists who suffer serious injuries. However, any Connecticut bicyclist who has been injured in an accident with a motorist may want to speak with a personal injury attorney in order to discover if negligence played a part in the accident.
