Number of traffic deaths rise for first half of 2015

Besides family parties and extensive shopping binges, the holiday season also means an increase in the number of people driving. This increase in drivers can sometimes also result in a rise in the number of fatal accidents on the road. Drivers need to be concerned about this holiday increase since recent data indicates that the initial months of 2015 saw a dramatic increase in the number of traffic deaths.

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, traffic deaths increased eight percent during the first six months of 2015. This is in stark contrast to the last decade which saw a 25 percent decline in traffic deaths. The NHTSA believes that the reduction in traffic deaths was due to a combination of safer cars, public awareness about drunken driving and fewer miles being driven by motorists.

A NHTSA spokesman stated the increase in traffic deaths could not be traced to just one variable such as more people being on the road. He felt that additional factors such as drivers’ texting with smartphones, drunk or drowsy driving and a higher number of teenagers driving could also have led to the increase.

NHTSA also revealed that while traffic deaths dropped sharply over the last decade, they only fell by .01 percent in 2014. The firm also indicated that Americans drove 1.54 trillion miles during the first half of 2015, an increase of 3.5 percent from the year before.

Statistics like this mean that drivers need to exercise additional caution while on the road. However, any Connecticut resident who has been involved in a fatal accident or suffered a serious injury in an accident may want to speak with a personal injury attorney in order to examine all possible legal avenues.
