What are the most common symptoms of whiplash?

Connecticut residents know that any type of car accident can cause serious injuries. This is because of the forces involved when two objects meet at a high rate of speed. After an accident, many victims are often commonly diagnosed with whiplash. But what are the symptoms of this injury and what are the common treatments?

Whiplash is a soft tissue neck injury. It is also known as a neck strain or a neck sprain. This type of injury occurs because the neck suddenly flexes and extends due to an application of force, which is what occurs during a motorcycle and car collision or most other types of accidents. Whiplash can involve different parts of the neck including the discs, joints, ligaments as well as the surrounding muscles and nerves.

The most common symptoms of whiplash include neck pain, both right afterwards and even days after the accident. Other symptoms include neck stiffness, dizziness, headache, a burning sensation in the neck area or even shoulder and back pain.

Treatment for whiplash includes medications such as non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, pain medications and muscle relaxants. Additional treatments can include a cervical collar which is placed around the victim’s neck to support it. Physical therapy can also be very important and can help the victim restore their range of motion.

The good news about whiplash is that most victims recover from it. However, any Connecticut resident who has been involved in an accident and has suffered from whiplash may also want to speak with an accident attorney in order to more fully understand the legal avenues that are available to them.
