Common hazards that can lead to a slip and fall accident

Being an owner of a building or any other type of property involves a great deal of organization and responsibility. The owner must constantly be aware of any type of situation that could be considered hazardous. This is because any dangerous condition that develops on the property has the potential to cause injuries such as a slip and fall accident. So here are some familiar types of hazards that can lead to a slip and fall accident.

One of the most common hazardous conditions that can result in a slip and fall accident is a wet floor. A wet floor can be caused by a spill, a leaky pipe or even by the elements such as rain and snow. Many times the liquids that are spilled are clear and therefore difficult to see, which makes the situation even more dangerous. It is critically important for property owners or business managers to make sure that the spill area is cordoned off as quickly as possible by using ‘Wet Floor’ signs or by other approved methods. The spill should then be wiped up using an appropriate cleaning technique.

Another common hazard is uneven or irregular walking surfaces in a building. This type of condition can appear almost anywhere including at entrances, hallways and anywhere that carpeting is used. The constant traffic on carpeting can cause it to buckle and roll up and moisture from rain or snow can find its way under entranceway tiles and cause them to buckle and swell as well. The best way to avoid a hazardous condition in these areas is to repair these problems as soon as they are identified.

Inadequate lighting can also lead to a slip and fall accident because people may not be able to see properly and may not be able to avoid an unsafe condition. Property owners should always make sure that all lighting fixtures are working properly and that these lights have the proper level of brightness.

Slip and fall accidents can often be quite serious and leave a victim with serious injuries. Any Connecticut resident who has been injured in a premise liability situation may want to speak with a personal injury attorney in order to fully understand the legal options available to them.
