What laws does a Connecticut cyclist need to follow?

| May 28, 2015 | Uncategorized |

Cycling can be one of the best ways to enjoy the spring and summer months in Connecticut. But because they share the same roads, cyclists and motorists need to watch out for each other. It’s important to remember that motorists and cyclists in Connecticut are subject to the same laws when they are on the road. They must obey all traffic signs and use proper signals when turning and stopping. But unlike a motorist in a vehicle, under state law a bicyclist must also wear a helmet that fits correctly. According to statistics, nearly three quarters of fatal bicycle accidents involve head injuries, so it’s important to make sure a bicycle helmet fits properly; it should never sit more than two fingers width above a cyclist’s brow.

Once on the road, there are some basic rules cyclists must follow. These include riding on the right side of the road with the flow of traffic and staying as far to the right as possible. To avoid impeding automotive traffic, cyclists should not ride more than two abreast and they should form a single line to allow motorists to pass if necessary.

In addition to following the laws of the road, cyclists need to be sure their bicycles are safe. Before they ride they should make sure their tires are inflated to the correct pressure and the brakes function correctly. They should also check their handlebars and seats to make sure they are properly adjusted.

Two other safety tips cyclists should remember are to ride in a predictable pattern and to always be visible to motorists. This means wearing bright clothes as well as having a white front light and a red back light or reflector on their bicycles.
