A high school football player is in good spirits as he recovers from a serious brain injury he suffered in a recent football game. It took doctors two operations to fix the bleeding and pressure building up in the boy’s head, but the teenager is now back at home resting with his family.
According to the victim, he collided with a player on the opposing team and immediately began experiencing serious pain in his head. After coaches and parents noticed the swelling, he was taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital. There, doctors diagnosed him with a traumatic brain injury.
As his mother later explained it, the boy’s head went one way while his brain went the other at the moment of collision, causing a blood vessel to burst. While the student will no longer be participating in football games, his parents are simply happy to have him healthy again.
Serious brain trauma like that suffered by this athlete often causes a permanent disability. Even with aggressive therapy and rehabilitation, patients with traumatic brain injuries may be forced to endure some of their symptoms for the rest of their lives.
