Connecticut State Police reported a two-vehicle crash on Route 82 south of Hartford early last Monday morning. According to reports, a Ford Ranger crossed the center line near Haddam and struck a 2009 Izuzu traveling in the opposite direction. Both vehicles were engulfed in flames.
Fortunately, both drivers were able to exit their vehicles before emergency personnel responded. The driver of the Ranger, though, suffered severe burns and lacerations. He was transported to the Bridgeport Hospital by helicopter. The driver of the Izuzu, meanwhile, was taken to the hospital with a minor brain injury and back injuries.
Authorities were not immediately able to explain why the vehicles burst into flames. While the blunt force of motor vehicle accidents always threatens to inflict a head injury or other contusions, burns are less common. With new safety features in modern automobiles, fiery crashes are not the norm
Nevertheless, this incident highlights the vast array of injuries a victim can suffer at the hands of another person’s negligence. Injuries such as traumatic brain injuries or burns are not easily fixed. Both may require years of treatment and rehabilitation. Even then, the effects of the trauma may last a lifetime.
