An 83-year-old Bristol woman was killed this past week in a deadly car crash. The fatal accident occurred on Stevens Street in Bristol. A Cadillac driven by a 21-year-old crossed the centerline and struck an SUV head-on. The 83-year-old passenger in the SUV died at the Hartford Hospital of internal injuries.
The other occupants of the SUV all sustained injuries. The other two passengers were both taken to the hospital in serious to critical condition. The driver of the SUV sustained only minor injuries. Meanwhile, police say that the driver of the Cadillac suffered serious leg and hip injuries.
It was unclear whether or not the driver of the Cadillac will face any charges in this case. According to police, the incident was still under investigation. Even if the driver is not charged criminally, though, the passengers of the SUV may still have a cause of action against the driver for possible negligence.
This cause of action may extend to the family of the deceased. Wrongful death lawsuits are available for Connecticut residents who lose a loved one in an accident. This type of litigation can calculate damages by adding up the full amount of lost wages over the course of a person’s life. And, for those like the 83-year-old victim who do not have substantial income to look forward to in this kind of situation or occurrence, certain family members also may recover damages. These damages may include financial compensation for loss of companionship, final medical expenses and funeral and burial expenses, among other items.
