Hartford porch collapse raises more premises liability concerns

| Jul 25, 2013 | Uncategorized |

Multiple news agencies reported on a porch collapse in Hartford late last week. According to the reports, three people were injured when part of the roof on a three-story house collapsed. Fortunately, the injuries were described as non-life threatening and minor.

Two of the victims were working on the roof when the accident occurred. The third person injured was a resident of the home. Local fire officials and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration were busy investigating the cause of the accident and potential for premises liability issues.

Dangerous property conditions like this abound. As America’s infrastructure ages, more and more buildings weaken. Though this is viewed as a national problem, it can be a property owner’s problem when the obligation to ensure their premises are safe falls to them. If they do not comply they can be subject to liability to those injured on their property.

This liability would likely extend to those hired to work on a piece of property. While they almost assuredly have recourse in the form of workers compensation, employees may also recover from a property owner under certain circumstances.

Depending upon how the incident occurred, victims of dangerous property conditions may want to get more information about options for determining which parties can be held accountable for their injuries and resulting economic loss. Since recovery can be limited in some instances, it is vital for victims to consider all avenues of relief. If they don’t, their recovery could be stifled and they could be on the hook for lingering medical bills, lost wages and other incidental damages.
