Nighttime truck accident on I-95 causes serious injuries

Driving down the Interstate during the middle of the night requires a person to pay particular attention to their surroundings. Not only must they be aware of obstacles on the road that might be obscured by darkness, but they have to be on the lookout for drowsy drivers who have been on the road too long and drunk drivers heading home after a night out. Unfortunately, nighttime accidents do occur for a variety of reasons that have the potential to be very serious.

Two people were hospitalized, one with serious injuries, following a truck accident in the Fairfield area on Interstate 95 by northbound exit 19. The driver of a semi-truck was traveling northbound in the right-hand lane of traffic at approximately 1:15 a.m. when it struck a metal guardrail and then proceeded to strike an electric pole.

Following that the driver of a second semi-truck struck the electric pole, which had fallen across every lane of traffic. The driver of the second semi-truck was able to safely pull over to the shoulder of the Interstate.

After that, a man driving a Hyundai Sonata struck the truck operated by the second semi-truck driver from behind as he attempted to avoid the crash. The crash caused the man driving the Hyundai to become trapped underneath the semi-truck it hit. It took 17 firefighters to extricate him. Firefighters had to employ airbags and pneumatic struts to raise the semi-truck, and then had to use hydraulic cutting and spreading instruments to free the trapped man.

The driver of the Hyundai was sent to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the first semi-truck was also sent to the hospital. Ultimately the crash reportedly involved 10 vehicles. The crash is being investigated by the police.

Sorting out liability in complex truck accidents such as this can be difficult. A police investigation could prove to be helpful, but anyone injured in a multi-vehicle accident may want to seek the advice of an attorney.
